"While you were AWOL," Wallace began. We were sitting in his office, which wasn't large considering he was a very senior Tasmanian. "We had an assignment come up that I thought we could use the Ghost Platoon on, so I called your second in command. He claimed the group wasn't fit for an assignment, but you were the only person missing. Then I called the entire group together, trying to find someone to lead the platoon. To a man, they said none of them could do what you do. They said they always disagreed with what you wanted to do. For example, on Magara, they all wanted to go to the active area, but you took them to one of the low-activity areas. On Wanzhou, to a man, they wanted to join the charge against the caves, but you took them into the caves, and the Rillians solution was way beyond anything they would have conceived. No one thinks like you, consequently, I was unlikely to get the results you get no matter who I put in charge. I had to agree when thinking about the mountain men assignment. I couldn't understand why you wanted to interview the so-called victims. I came to the same conclusion as they did, the Ghost Platoon is your personal platoon. It works because of the way you think, and without you, it would just be another Tasmanian squad." He held up a hand. "I know you say they do all the work, and I'm sure there is a lot of truth in that statement, but without your direction, the results wouldn't be the same. Enough of that. Are you fit for duty?"
"Me? That was the most fun I've had in years, excluding the eight days they had me locked up," I said. "I have been trying to figure out how we can find twelve more psychopaths that like killing humans. Then I can hold a Tasmanian raffle to select the lucky contestants."
"Get out of here, Jolie," Wallace waved at the door. "I was expecting you to be traumatized by the experience, and you're hyped at having found a new kind of amusement park."
He was laughing as I closed the door.
That night I went to the Devil's Club on base. As usual, it was crowded, and I got several offers to join groups. Seeing Medina at one of the tables, I headed in that direction.
"Cathy, when is our next girls' night-out party? The last one was fantastic!" I said as someone found me a chair.
"We have all been worried sick, and you have been having the time of your life," Medina said, shaking her head in disbelief.
"Hey, how often do you get to kill really sick psychopaths that deserve killing?" I asked, warming to my rant. "Often, we are killing soldiers like ourselves who we don't hate and who don't hate us. We are just following orders. These psychopaths were killing men and women who hadn't committed any crimes.
